Cheryl Reid, BMusEd

Cheryl Reid has been a professional musician and educator for over 35 years, including 19 years teaching with the TDSB and 15 years with Doane Music School. As a percussionist and drummer, Cheryl has toured extensively in North America and Australia with Ember Swift and has recorded with Garnet Rogers and Arlene Bishop. Cheryl learned ukulele along with Melanie Doane in the original J. Chalmers Doane Program in Halifax schools and was part of the top group that toured the country, appeared on television and played for dignitaries from Princess Diana to Danny Kaye. As a Doane Music School Instructor with Melanie from the early days, Cheryl is so proud to be passing along this excellent music program to the next generation.

Jennifer Foster

A lifelong ukulele enthusiast, Jennifer has been playing and arranging music on uke since childhood, starting out in the J. Chalmers Doane Program at her New Brunswick elementary school. A singer-songwriter and musician, she has released several solo albums and collaborated widely across the Canadian music scene, contribu-ting her musical skills to many projects including The Pursuit of Happiness, Rheostatics, and the The Echo Women’s Choir. To the delight of her students, Jennifer can be seen in many episodes of Schitt’s Creek as one of infamous the Jazzagals. Jennifer is proud to share her love of the ukulele with students all across Toronto.

Cara Hunter

Cara began playing the ukulele as a Grade 4 student in the Chalmers Doane program in Vancouver, BC. Now a Toronto-based Canadian actor and singer, Cara has performed on stages across the country and the continent over her 30 year career. Some theatrical highlights include the original Toronto cast of Les Miserables, War Horse and most recently in Canadian Stage’s Christmas panto, Ross Petty’s Robin Hood: A Very Merry Family Musical. She is absolutely delighted to be a part of the Doane Music School program delivering music education to the next generation of artists and musicians.

Arjuna (RJ) Satchithananthan

RJ is one of Toronto’s most in demand musicians. Alongside his work with the Heavyweights, RJ has performed and recorded with R&B, Jazz and Hip-Hop legends Jully Black, Kardinal Offishall and K-OS, Luke McMaster, Stephen Page, The Sattalites, Sean Desman, the legendary Persian Singer Ebi and many others. RJ is also a composer, arranger and teacher. In 2015 he became a founding member of the Hogtown Brass Quintet. In 2021, he worked on his first feature film, orchestrating the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for the soundtrack to Jason Eisener’s “Kids Vs. Aliens”. RJ has been teaching with DMS for 3 years.

Lisa Olafson

Thanks to her music-rich Alberta background, Lisa Olafson learned the ukulele and flute and sang in the choir before switching to acting, receiving professional training at Studio 58 in Vancouver. Lisa has toured internationally with the renowned mask and mime Theatre Beyond Words, written and toured her solo clown show and currently performs with the bluegrass trio, Dirty Dishes. She loves teaching music and is thrilled to share the happiest instrument – the ukulele – as a Doane Music School instructor.

Jamie Martinez

Growing up in Halifax in a large family where music was a top priority, Jamie learned to sing, harmonize and play the clarinet. She had the privilege of receiving excellent free public school music programming under the direction of J. Chalmers Doane and was in Halifax’s top ukulele group that toured Canada and made studio records, along with friends Melanie Doane and Cheryl Reid. She also was a member of Halifax City Choirs, The Chebucto Singers and The Chebuctones. Now living in Toronto, Jamie is honoured to be a Doane Music School Instructor.

Andrea Whiteacre, BFAMusic

From an early age, Andrea has loved creating and performing music, first singing, then as a singer-songwriter accompanying herself on guitar. She attended York University’s Fine Arts Music program as a jazz vocalist before moving on to studies in philosophy and education. Andrea gained a wealth of experience as an educator with over 30 years as a classroom teacher. She is also a founding member of the popular Toronto-based cover band “Big Night Out!”. Andrea loves the versatility and joyfulness of the ukulele, and is thrilled to share this enthusiasm with her DMS students.

Angela Dwyer, MAEd

Angela discovered the joy of playing the ukulele as part of the J. Chalmers Doane Ukulele program playing in the “A” Group in St John’s, NL in the 1970’s. Angela’s experience includes working with ukulele virtuoso James Hill, her most recent position being Director of Teacher Training at Uketropolis. She maintains a private teaching studio in her hometown of Truro, NS and directs various ensembles. She holds an MAEd focused on Lifelong Learning, and is a Certified Health Coach. Angela’s mission is to help people discover their own path to optimal health through music. She performs in various ensembles including the Chalmers Doane Trio taking her turn on ukulele, bass and piano.

Suzanne Doane, BMusEd

A specialist in band, strings, ukulele as well as classroom music, Suzanne has taught thousands of children in the public school system during her long career in Nova Scotia. Recently retired from the school board, Suzanne has created a successful adult uke program in her community with DMS and continues to work with her many private piano students. She also acts as a music director and writer for productions at the Highland Arts Theatre. She is a published composer/creator of original musicals and a prolific songwriter and arranger. She grew up in the Halifax Schools Music Dept and is pleased to be working alongside her sister Melanie as they carry on the musical legacy of their dad J. Chalmers Doane by learning, practicing, and having fun together.

Margaret Poole

Margaret grew up playing violin, ukulele, and piano in the Halifax public schools music program under the innovative leadership of her uncle, J. Chalmers Doane, along with singing in multiple choirs and making music with her family. She has many fond memories of being in Halifax’s celebrated uke program – from being part of an NFB film shoot in Halifax harbour, to playing for Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana, making records, and touring across Canada. She is currently a public relations consultant in Halifax (Poole Communications) and is very happy to be sharing her lifelong love of music (and following in the footsteps of her mom, aunt, two uncles and several cousins) by teaching a new generation of music students in Halifax.

Linda Kronbergs

A singer, multi-instrumentalist, vocal coach, music director, actress and realtor, Linda has never been happier than when playing the ukulele. Linda toured Canada extensively with Thomas Trio & The Red Albino, Melanie Doane, Universal Honey, and in support of her debut solo CD ‘Buttercup’. She has received the highest civilian order: ‘Order of the Three Stars’ for 30 years of performances in the iconic Latvian pop group ‘Čikāgas Piecīši’. She is currently putting her Orff Specialist and ECME diplomas to good use with the Malton SDA Seniors and at Doane Music School. 

Tim Collins, BMus

Tim Collins is a music instructor at the Doane Music School who brings energy, patience, and a sense of fun to every class. With degrees in Music Performance from Humber College and Western University, and over 14 years of teaching experience overall, Tim has spent the past two years at DMS leading group ukulele classes for grade 4 students. His classes balance laughter and learning, helping young musicians build confidence, teamwork, and a genuine love of making music together. 

Shannon Butcher, BMus

Shannon is an acclaimed Canadian singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer. She is proud to be an established part of the Toronto jazz community as a performer, coach and educator. Along with her own private voice studio, Shannon has been on the music faculty of Humber College and Mohawk College and currently holds a position at Toronto Metropolitan University. Over the years she has worked with The National Music Camp and youth choirs such as Young Voices Toronto and La Jeunesse. As a ukulele player for over two decades she is thrilled to share her love of the instrument with the students of Doane Music School!


Audrey VanDenDriesschen

Audrey is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter, vocalist, and violinist. A recent graduate of the Bachelor of Music program at Humber College, she has studied and performed in a wide range of styles, including classical, jazz, and folk. Her performance experience spans festivals and venues across Canada, reflecting both her versatility and passion for connecting with audiences. She is thrilled to be part of the team at Doane Music School, sharing the joy of the ukulele with students and fostering a love of music in learners of all ages. 

Robin Vaughan, BMus, BEd

Robin is a recently retired music teacher from the Toronto District School Board with a music degree from Mount Allison University and an education degree from the University of Toronto. During his 30 years with the TDSB, he taught in a diverse range of music programs including concert bands, choirs, jazz ensembles, Orff, guitar, bucket drumming and ukulele. In addition to his music experiences in the classroom, Robin has been a member of Orpheus Choir of Toronto, Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto as well as performing as a guitarist and saxophonist with a variety of bands in the GTA. He is excited to be part of the Doane Music School team and to continue sharing his love of music.

Charlotte Alexander, BMus

Charlotte is an up and coming Toronto-based brass musician, specializing in French Horn. She performs across Ontario in genres from classical to jazz, hip hop to musicals, and brass band to klezmer. Her performances have taken her to the stages of many venues in Toronto, including the Meridian Arts Center, Jane Mallet Theater, The Opera House, Lee’s Palace, and The Rex. With many performances and recordings under her belt,  she “bolsters [Goudy’s] argument that there’s simply not enough French horn on modern jazz recordings” - Marie Goudy, The Republic of Jazz. Charlotte started a Masters in French Horn Performance at the University of Toronto in September 2025, studying under Nicholas Hartman, and is set to graduate in June 2027.
